EU governments to negotiate two-year top-up for nuclear research programme

EU governments will start negotiations this week to extend the Euratom nuclear research programme Euratom for another two years. This will align it with the EU budget, which runs to 2027, and the Horizon Europe programme.

Nuclear energy is an important strategic resource for Europe, with nuclear fission accounting for 24% of electricity produced in the EU in 2024. Euratom funds both nuclear fission and fusion energy research.

The planned Euratom extension put forward last week by the Commission is largely a continuation of past work, backed by a budget of €598 million.
