Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes fans have seen 'peak Arsenal' under Mikel Arteta last season. The Gunners recorded a hugely impressive 16 wins from their final 18 games during the 2023/24 run in but they would still miss out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
This season, they find themselves 15 points behind Arne Slot's Liverpool, but have a game in hand on the Reds. there's been plenty of debate online regarding last season's Gunners' side and whether or not they'd win the Premier League title in the current campaign.
Slot's side are the favourites to win the trophy come the end of the season, with ten games left for the Gunners to make up lost ground. Mikel Arteta's side would need a perfect run from now until the end of the season, reminiscent of last season, but the odds are stacked against them given the current injury crisis up front.
"Arsenal were a better team last season, I've said that before," Carragher told Sky Sports Monday Night Football. "This idea that they would have won the league this season, I'm not so sure.
"I mean they got 89 points last season Arsenal. If we're judging on that, I think Liverpool will get over 89 points. Liverpool have only lost once and I think Arsenal had lost more than once by this stage of the season.
"I do feel and I have been saying for a long time that we've seen peak Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. That doesn't mean that they can't win in the future.
"What I saw in the second-half of last season, I'm not sure it does get better than that. Can they do that over a full season? That would be better, but in terms of the second-half of last season, they played 18, won 16, drew one and lost one.
"I mean the football they were playing, how strong they were defensively, the pressing. Watching them play they were like a machine they were absolutely fantastic.
"Unfortunately for them, they came up against one of the best teams in Premier League history. The timing is probably just a little bit out if you like.
"I think if you're going to win the league, you've got to get 90 points, 90 plus and this Arsenal team under Arteta haven't quite done that at the moment. To say the team last season, would have won the league this season, I don't buy that.
