The attacker was recently criticised for his defensive workrate by Ruben Amorim

Highly-rated Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho is reportedly planning his exit route from Old Trafford as he closes in on a blockbuster transfer to a European giant.

That’s according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes which states that the eight-time Argentina international has reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with La Liga heavyweights Atletico Madrid over a potential summer move to the capital.

Garnacho, who is widely considered to be one of United’s most exciting attacking talents when in full flow, has struggled to find his feet under new manager Ruben Amorim and has completed 90 minutes just four times under the Portuguese coach and was the subject of rampant speculation linking him with moves away from the club with Napoli after the sale of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Chelsea after the loan exit of Joao Felix to AC Milan both being linked with the talented winger.

Alejandro Garnacho reaches ‘verbal agreement’ with Atletico Madrid

According to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid have “already reached a verbal agreement” on a deal for Garnacho in order to sign him in the summer transfer window. This has not been confirmed by the 20-year-old winger but reports from the outlet add that United are open to the idea of selling the youngster for the right price as Ruben Amorim aims to mould the Red Devils team in his image.

Garnacho spent five years of his youth career with Atletico and was born in Madrid, so a move to Diego Simeone’s side would likely represent an ideal homecoming for the youngster ahead of the World Cup in 2026.The attacker has also been benched at times during Amorim’s reign despite the avalanche of injury problems his team has and it is not yet clear if he is part of his plans moving forward.

Garnacho enjoyed one of his most impressive games of 2025 by helping his side pick up a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Premier League title hopefuls Arsenal but in the run-up to that game he had been called out by Amorim for being ‘late’ to his defensive duties in the build-up to Real Sociedads goal during a 1-1 draw in the Europa League.

“I felt he was tired,” Amorim said, via United in Focus. “You see it because we did a lot of transitions in the second half because sometimes he was late to defend.”

Alejandro Garnacho’s season in numbers

Alejandro Garnacho joined United four years ago from Atletico Madrid but only really established himself as a first team fixture during the 2022/23 season when he made 33 appearances across all competitions with the vast majority coming as an impact sub.

However, he was a bright spark for an under-performing Red Devils team last term with 10 goals and five assists in 50 appearances across all competitions while notably helping his team to an FA Cup triumph over rivals Manchester City.

Garnacho was expected to achieve even greater heights this season but has so far failed to meet expectations with eight goals and seven assists this term, with two of his goals and two of his assists coming in a 6-0 rout against Barnsley. The Argentine winger, however, remains a strong prospect at 20-years-of-age and accordingto reports from Sky Sports over the January window is valued at around £60m.
