Justin Fields reportedly lands big contract with surprising new NFL team

Skip to content Justin Fields is reportedly coming off the free-agent market and will reunite with former Ohio State star Garrett Wilson via the New York Jets.

The deal was reported on Monday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and is for 2 years and $40 million. Schefter reports the deal includes $30 million guaranteed, a significant investment to Fields as the successor to Aaron Rodgers’s brief tenure in New York.

Fields, the Georgia native who began his career in Athens under Kirby Smart, has yet to fully live up to the hype that he had coming out of Ohio State as the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After 3 seasons with the Chicago Bears, Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the 2024 season where he appeared in 10 total games as part of a 2-quarterback system with Russell Wilson.

Fields did start 6 games for the Steelers with the team going 4-2 in those contests, and he delivered career-best accuracy numbers throwing the ball. However, the team went just 6-5 with Wilson as the starter.

Now, Fields will get his opportunity to make a significant impact in New York, and the reunion with Wilson has to have fans excited. He was one of Fields’s favorite targets throughout the 2019-20 seasons in Columbus, finishing with 73 catches and over 1,100 yards in that time span.

Wilson has opened his NFL career with 3 straight seasons of 1,000+ receiving yards, an especially impressive accomplishment considering he has played with 6 different starting quarterbacks in that time frame. Now, we’ll see if Fields can help stabilize the position and help both Wilson and the Jets find more consistent success.
