NBA star accepts assistant GM role with alma mater

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry has accepted a role with his alma mater Davidson Wildcats to become the assistant general manager for the men’s and women’s basketball programs, the school announced Monday.

Curry, a 4-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, will also partner with his wife, Ayesha, former Davidson soccer player Matt Berman, and supporters Erica and Don Berman to establish the Curry-Berman Fund. The eight-figure fund will support both basketball programs and invest in athletes' name, image and likeness, Davidson said in a [news release](https://www.davidson.edu/news/2025/03/10/curry-berman-start-funding-davidson-college-basketball).

With his new role, Curry becomes the first active athlete in U.S. professional sports to take an administrative position with an NCAA team.

“The Davidson experience is top notch,” Curry said in the release. “My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high character student athletes to have that same experience.”

Matt Berman will also serve as assistant GM for both programs alongside Curry.

In addition, Davison hired Austin Buntz as general manager and assistant athletic director for basketball development. Buntz, who has been on Davidson’s fundraising team since 2021, previously served as a member of the global basketball sports marketing team for Under Armour, which Curry signed a partnership with in 2013.

Curry, the son of former NBA guard Dell Curry, played three seasons at Davidson from 2006-09. As a sophomore, he set the NCAA single-season record with 162 threes in a season, which was tied by Liberty’s Darius McGhee in 2022-23. He was twice named the Southern Conference Player of the Year, named Second Team All-American as a sophomore and First-Team All-American as a junior.

After three seasons at Davidson, Curry was drafted seventh overall by the Warriors in the 2009 NBA Draft. The 16-year NBA vet has played his entire career with Golden State, earning 11 All-Star selections, two All-Star game MVPs and two scoring titles, along with four NBA titles and two MVP awards.
