Former Liverpool defender gets new Sporting Director role

Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has landed a new role as the sporting director of another club following his exit from his old job.

Martin Skrtel made over 320 appearances during his eight and a half year stay at Anfield. While many claim he was underrated at Anfield, the former Slovakian international probably deserves more praise than he gets from the Merseyside club.

Althoughthe 40-year-old joined Slovakian team Dunajska Streda in September 2024 as the club’s sporting director, he found things tough in his stay. Skrtel had a premature period in the position, as he departed after just 35 days.

Ex-Reds’ defender lands new job as Sporting Director

Securing the right choice for the sporting director position is not easy for any team. Skrtel’s experience at Dunajska Streda, most likely revealed that to him and the former professional footballer has now landed the same role at a different club.

The ex-player who racked up over 100 appearances for the Slovakian national team, has been announced as the new sporting director of Spartak Trnava.

Skrtel ended his playing career at the club back in his home country, and was announced as the sporting director of the same side on Monday. This comes after his exit from Trnava’s league rivals in October last year.

According to rousingthekop, Spartak Trnava last claimed the Slovak First League in the 2017-18 season. Historically, they are one of the biggest clubs in Slovakia and they usually compete in European competitions.

This season, they were knocked out of the UEFA Conference League in the qualifying rounds. They made it to the group stages of the same competition in the 2023-24 season, while also reaching the same stage of the Europa League in the 2018-19 season.

Martin Skrtel will be hoping for success and better luck as the sporting director at his new club, with his departure from Dunajska Streda being described as under mysterious circumstances according to reports.
