Newswise — Juan C. Ibla, MD, MS, FAAP, has been appointed Division Head of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Ibla also will serve as Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology and Director for Perioperative Medicine within the Heart Center. Dr. Ibla will hold the hold the Marvin E. Wodika Research Professorship in Cardiology.
Dr. Ibla’s research focuses on hemostasis, transfusion and coagulation in children with congenital heart disease, and he was instrumental in establishing a clinical coagulation laboratory for cardiovascular surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, which he manages as Co-Director.

Dr. Ibla, completed his medical school in Bogota, Colombia, followed by education in the United States. His training included a post-doctoral fellowship in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology followed by his residency in Anesthesiology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston and fellowships in Clinical Research, Hematology, Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He recently obtained a master’s degree in Clinical Service Operations from Harvard University.
On the national level, Dr. Ibla is active in the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative and the Congenital Cardiac Catheterization Project on Outcomes-Quality Improvement. He also chairs the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society Latin America Interest Group. He is the Founder and President of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Consortium in Latin America, and is frequently invited to present internationally.
Dr. Ibla will assume his leadership roles at Lurie Children’s on March 31, 2025.
