Bruno Guimarães' 63rd minute goal means West Ham United will need to come from behind to claim a result against Newcastle United on Monday night.
The visitors' Brazilian midfielder stole in round the back to convert a cross from the left and break the deadlock in a tightly contested affair.
Both teams had chances in the opening period, with West Ham's best opportunity coming with just 43 seconds on the clock, but Tomáš Souček knocked over the bar after Mohammed Kudus' cross evaded Jarrod Bowen and Tino Livramento and dropped to the Czech midfielder at the back post.
At the other end, Alphonse Areola made sharp saves to deny Harvey Barnes twice.
Just before kick-off, Michail Antonio was welcomed back to London Stadium by the Claret and Blue Army. Our No9 is currently working his way back to fitness after suffering serious injuries in a car accident in December.
