The Chargers are running it back with center Bradley Bozeman as the team has reported a multi-year extension for last year’s starter at the pivot. The team announced the move alongside their extension for punter J.K. Scott which was reported on earlier Monday.
Bozeman returning to the Chargers may come as a surprise to those who believed the team would attempt to upgrade the position following an underwhelming season by all three interior positions up front. Per Pro Football Focus, Bozeman recorded an overall season grade of 61.0, good for 24th among all 32 centers who played at least 500 snaps this past season. His 64.8 run block grade ranked 18th among that group while his pass block grade of 51.4 ranked 28th.
Extending Bozeman is truly a move made with the locker room in mind. Bozeman is a phenomenal personality who does a lot of community improvement wherever he happens to be playing. He also showed that he’d be willing to fight for his quarterback on more than one discussions during at least one or two dustups on the field in 2024.
The Chargers needed a center and they now have one locked in place for the foreseeable future. It may not be the center that fans hoped for, but now the front office can look towards the draft in order to improve the guard position and the remainder of their cap space, which is still pretty hefty through one day of free agency.
