West Ham 0-1 Newcastle United: Guimarães’ strike keeps Magpies’ European dream alive

Newcastle United earned three points after defeating West Ham 1-0 at the London Stadium on Monday night in the Premier League.

Bruno Guimarães’ second-half strike separated the sides and has lifted Eddie Howe’s side to sixth in the table in their quest for European football.

West Ham were the quickest out of the blocks when Mohammed Kudus’ cross bounced through to Tomáš Souček from close-range, but he somehow failed to hit the target in the opening minute.

In what was a testing contest for both sides, chances were few and far between for both sides in the opening 20 minutes.

Harvey Barnes tested Alphonse Areola on two separate occasions, forcing the Frenchman into some challenging reflex saves.

Kudus almost gave West Ham the lead moments before the interval, but some experienced defending from Kieran Trippier helped delay the opportunity and clear the danger.

Once play had restarted, West Ham continued to probe forward but struggled to find a finishing touch despite keeping most of the ball.

Max Kilman breathed a sigh of relief on the hour mark, when Jacob Murphy’s cross proved too much for the defender to handle, forcing Areola into a jaw-dropping save.

Moments later, Barnes’ inviting cross picked out Guimarães at the back post and the Brazilian midfielder latched onto the effort to give the visitors the lead.

Newcastle’s next fixture is a trip to Wembley to face league leaders Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, while Graham Potter’s side are set to travel to Merseyside to face Everton at Goodison Park.
