Newcastle United pinched three points from West Ham under the lights in Stratford on Monday night.

West Ham missed the chance to jump to 13th in the Premier League table, above Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, when beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United at the London Stadium on Monday night.

The Hammers got the better of the Magpies at St James’ Park in November with a 2-0 win and there wasn’t much to separate the sides this week. Ultimately, a tidy Bruno Guimaraes poked finish was enough to take three points back to the North East but Graham Potter will be frustrated not to take at least a point from this match.

Mohammed Kudus had his moments and Tomas Soucek missed a good chance in the opening minutes but Potter found little added impetus from the bench to try and bring the Hammers level. Here’s how the West Ham players rated.

West Ham player ratings

GK - Alphonse Areola, 9

Could not believe my eyes as Areola made his cat-like jump to claw out a goalbound Max Kilman header in the second half. That was some memorable stuff. Had to be lively in the first half too with some sharp stops to stop the Magpies converting a couple of half chances.

LWB - Ollie Scarles, 7

Looked very comfortable on that flank against Jacob Murphy and the experienced Kieran Trippier. Found plenty of space at times too, sometimes missed out on by his teammates.

CB - Aaron Cresswell, 5

Perhaps not his best balls into the box tonight and caught shouting for offside rather than being aware of Guimaraes for the goal.

CB - Max Kilman, 7

Calm when closing down a promising Newcastle United break early, which helped set the tone for West Ham. Clutched his head in disbelief when seeing Areola push out his header and prevent an own goal.

CB - Jean-Clair Todibo, 7

Pretty robust before his sub. His season could be summed up well in one moment - Todibo stole the ball off a charging Harvey Barnes with confidence and was cheered up the pitch with excitement by the London Stadium, only to play his first pass straight to a Newcastle United man.

RWB - Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 7

Comically fell over the ball after 23 minutes when one on one against Tino Livramento. That was Wan-Bissaka’s most memorable moment tonight, but it wasn’t a bad showing.

CM - Edson Alvarez, 5

There were some nice moments from Alvarez tonight, an occasional nuisance in the right ways in both boxes. Had a coming together with Guimaraes before the break which had hearts in mouths given his hot-headed record of red cards year. Was right for Potter to sub him early, the Hammers needed something more dynamic.

CM - James Ward-Prowse, 7

Involved early on, Ward-Prowse does a lot of good work in midfield and Julen Lopetegui no doubt regrets letting him leave on loan. Did fade as time went on.

CM - Tomas Soucek, 6

Had a golden opportunity early on but couldn’t get properly over a rising ball to prevent himself from sending a volley well over the bar. Subbed with 25 minutes to play.

Mohammed Kudus now 11 Premier League games without a goal

ST - Mohammed Kudus, 6

Truly frustrating tonight. Kudus is clearly desperate to break his duck having not scored in 2025 but may be too in his head about that. Some nice work on the break and a regular threat but sometimes needed to release quicker or drive with his old confidence.

ST - Jarrod Bowen, 8

Not a whole lot for him to work with tonight but seemingly incapable of a bad performance. Worked a good little opening in the opening quarter but his shot was unusually tame. Ended up dropping deeper to find influence as the game went on but did that well.

SUB - Carlos Soler, 5

Tried to get things going from just in front of the back four but struggled to find an impact over the halfway line.

SUB - Lucas Paqueta, 6

One of his first actions was to dink a ball into the box that led to the weak Bowen penalty shout. Struggled to find much more influence than that.

SUB - Konstantinos Mavropanos, 6

Looked like he had been told to play the ball long but struggled to find the outlets to do that. Not posed problems by the Magpies attack in his time on the pitch.

SUB - Evan Ferguson, 4

Not too involved in his cameo. One of the things he did do was shoot from range in injury time when he would have been better keeping the move going. Wasteful.

SUB - Danny Ings, 3

Largely anonymous.
