Darius Slayton, New York Giants, Agree to Contract

After the New York Giants selected LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers in the 2024 NFL Draft, Darius Slayton requested a revised contract. While he never received an extension, he earned a slight pay raise and the opportunity to cash in on the open market. The wide receiver had a relatively underwhelming season, appearing in 16 games while recording 39 receptions for 573 yards and two touchdowns. However, these stats come with an asterisk, as Slayton spent the season catching passes from the underwhelming trio of Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, and Drew Lock.

Darius Slayton originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Giants, the Auburn product entered training camp with low expectations but managed to be a diamond in the rough. Appearing in 14 games while making nine starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 48 receptions for 740 yards and eight touchdowns while primarily catching passes from fellow rookie Daniel Jones. He proved this wasn’t a one-year fluke in 2020, finishing the season with 50 receptions for 751 yards and three touchdowns.

After a disappointing 2021, Slayton bounced back under first-year head coach Brian Daboll in 2022. Appearing in all 16 games, the wide receiver finished the year with 46 receptions for 724 yards and two touchdowns as the Giants made an unlikely playoff run. Largely projected to be one of the worst teams in football, Daboll’s Giants made it to the NFC Divisional Round before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles.

While the team came back to earth in 2023, Slayton remained productive despite a rotating cast of quarterbacks. The former fifth-round pick tied a career-high in receptions (50) and set a personal record in receiving yards (770) and scoring four touchdowns.

Since signing his rookie contract, Darius Slayton has recorded 259 receptions for 3,897 yards and 21 touchdowns.
