STOCKHOLM – The Sweden-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group has called for immediate international action to secure the release of Armenians unlawfully detained in Baku under fabricated charges. The group warns that inaction will only encourage further repression and violations of human rights.
In an official statement, the Sweden-Armenia Friendship Group emphasized the urgent need for decisive action to ensure the unconditional release of all Armenian detainees.
The statement reads:
“We, the undersigned members of the Sweden-Armenia Friendship Group in the Swedish Riksdag, strongly condemn the Azerbaijani government’s blatant and systematic violations of human rights. The illegal imprisonment of Armenian detainees, including political figures and civilians, as well as their physical and psychological torture and political persecution, constitute not only a humanitarian crisis but also a clear violation of international law. Arbitrary detention based on unfounded accusations, used as a tool of political oppression, is a direct assault on fundamental human rights.”
The statement further highlights that the continued imprisonment of Armenian civilians and prisoners of war is a flagrant violation of the Geneva Conventions and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It continues:
“These actions, which have remained unpunished, amount to state-sanctioned torture and enforced disappearances aimed at silencing political dissent and instilling fear. Independent human rights organizations and legal experts have documented the inhumane and degrading treatment of these detainees. Subjected to brutal torture, denied legal representation, and forced into sham trials, they have become victims of grave injustices. This damages Azerbaijan’s international reputation and sets a dangerous precedent for authoritarian regimes worldwide.”
The statement underscores that these violations are not isolated incidents but deliberate crimes that undermine the foundations of human rights and international law.
“Azerbaijan’s continued use of political prisoners as leverage and its systematic mistreatment of detainees is a calculated strategy to destabilize regional peace and justice,” the Friendship Group stressed.
The signatory parliamentarians also warned that the absence of a strong international response only emboldens further abuses and repression.
“The international community’s failure to act against such severe violations is tantamount to complicity in the spread of authoritarianism and deepening crises. This is not just a matter of diplomacy; it is a moral and legal obligation. The world cannot stand idly by while such grave injustices persist. These actions are not only an assault on human dignity but also a direct challenge to the principles that uphold global stability, justice, and fundamental rights.”
The statement concludes by emphasizing that the world is watching, and the response to this crisis will define the commitment to justice and human rights.
