Paul Scholes has piled fresh criticism on "disappointing" Joshua Zirkzee by claiming he does not understand what the forward is meant to bring to struggling Manchester United.

The summer arrival again failed to impress in Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford, a meeting of sides who will be eager to bolster their attacks at the of the campaign.

And United legend Scholes claimed after the game that he is not sure what Zirzkee’s position is meant to be under Ruben Amorim. The Netherlands international, 23, remains on three league goals for the season with the last of those coming in early December, when he bagged a brace against Everton.

United's other striker, £72m Rasmus Hojlund, saw his scoreless run extend to 20 games, though Zirkzee at least found the net in last week's Europa League tie away to Real Sociedad.

After the match, Scholes told Premier League Productions: “Both teams are in desperate need of a striker. Zirkzee I thought was a little bit disappointing today. I’m not sure he’s a number nine or a number ten.

“I’m not really sure what Zirkzee brings to the team. Rasmus Hojlund is obviously still having his issues but both teams are crying out for attacking players.”

Bruno Fernandes had put United in front with a free kick late in the first half before Declan Rice levelled in the second period. And Amorim hailed his skipper after by saying his team needs more players with his mentality.

Amorim said: “I think any coach when he wants to bring players, he expects the best, but sometimes they have to adapt and sometimes you have luck with the character of the player or not.

“Even with all the investigation that all the coaches do before signing players. What I can say is that we need more Brunos. That is clear.

“Not just the quality, the character, not some mistakes, but the character that he has, the availability in this league, is so important and he’s so decisive with the ball and without the ball.”
