Former Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Close to Deal with AFC Contender (Report)

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers won the only Super Bowl of his career against the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2011. Now, he appears poised to join them in one of the most unexpected developments of the NFL offseason thus far.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Steelers have their sights set on the four-time NFL MVP after Justin Fields was signed by the New York Jets to replace the future Pro Football Hall of Famer himself.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Steelers and Rodgers could have an agreement in place as soon as Tuesday. He won’t be able to sign until Wednesday, when the Jets release him.”

Rodgers had previously been linked to the New York Giants, but the chance of joining a contender that just added two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf may be too good of a deal to pass up.

The possibility of Rodgers joining the Steelers after plans of his release from the Jets was considered almost right away. After all, Pittsburgh finished 10-7 last year behind the quarterback play of Fields and Russell Wilson.

However, as the weeks have passed, other teams seemed to be more probable. In recent days, the New York Giants appeared to have the inside track of signing the four-time NFL MVP.

But New York finished 3-14 last year and will not be ready to contend for some time. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, is ready to win now.

Florio notes that the possibility of playing for two more seasons is another factor that is enticing Rodgers to choose the Steelers:

“One big factor comes from Rodgers’s desire to play two more years. If he picks the Giants, and if the Giants fail to make it to the playoffs in 2025, co-owner John Mara could clean house in 2026. A new G.M. and a new head coach could result in the same decision the other New York team made this year — a decision to move on from Rodgers.

“In Pittsburgh, Rodgers is far more likely to get a second season. And he’s far more likely to return to the postseason for the first time since 2022.”

Of note, the Packers play the Steelers on the road this season. Many assumed that the NFL would make Green Bay the road team when Pittsburgh hosts the first NFL game in the nation of Ireland.

However, if Rodgers does sign with the Steelers, one would have to assume the league would not let such a rematch occur on foreign soil.
