Touchdown for Islander selected to join GB gridiron team

A FORMER Grainville and Hautlieu student has been selected for Great Britain’s Women’s American Football Team.

Emmaline Rodrigues (21) who is in her third year studying criminology and childhood studies at the University of Portsmouth, gave the sport a go in her first year at the campus and has excelled.

Emmaline’s sporting achievements do not stop there, as she is also a keen powerlifter and competes at a national level alongside the national and British university championships.

She trains for the sport with her university team called the Portsmouth Destroyers, and also a local team called the Solent Thrashers, and was picked for the GB team after a couple of national trials.

Emmaline said: “My passion for American Football developed from people telling me that I’m not strong enough or how it is a male-dominated sport, so when I found out that my university offered American Football as a sport, I wanted to play it to challenge myself.” After being selected, she said she was “really excited”.

Her next match will be in August – a home game against Finland – providing that she makes the game squad. She is also competing in the European championships in 2025 and 2026.

Emmaline has also expressed the need for a sponsorship. She said: “The sport is expensive to play especially at an international level”.

If anyone is interested in discussing sponsorship with Emmaline, they can email her on emilyrodrigues20041@outlook.com.
