Liverpool’s summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal in recent history, not just in terms of potential arrivals but also in securing the futures of key players.

While much attention has been given to the unresolved contract situations of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—who all have deals expiring in 2025—a new concern has emerged.

Ibrahima Konate, regarded as one of the best centre-backs in world football, is reportedly unwilling to extend his contract at Anfield, throwing Liverpool’s defensive stability into doubt. With his current deal set to expire in 2026, the club now faces a difficult decision: push for an extension or risk losing him for a cut-price fee this summer—or worse, for free the following year.

Real Madrid circling as Konate weighs his future

According to Defensa Central, Konate has already ruled out renewing with Liverpool and has set his sights on a move to Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants, who have struggled with injuries to Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Éder Militão, are in the market for defensive reinforcements.

The report claims that Madrid’s hierarchy, including club president Florentino Pérez and director José Ángel Sánchez, are seriously considering a move for the French international.

However, it remains uncertain whether they will make a bid this summer or wait until 2026 to sign him on a free transfer.

Paris Saint-Germain also keeping tabs

Liverpool’s problems don’t end there. As previously reported by Anfield Watch, Konate’s hometown club Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing him. With PSG looking to add more French talent to their squad, they could provide stiff competition for Real Madrid in the battle for his signature.

Speaking to Telefoot recently, Konate admitted he was flattered by interest from top European clubs but insisted his current focus remains on Liverpool’s season.

“Hearing that big clubs like these are interested in me is very flattering,” he said. “Now I’m focusing on this season to win everything. Afterwards, I’ll let my agents take care of my contractual situation.”

Liverpool’s defensive future at a crossroads

If the reports of Konate’s reluctance to extend his stay at Anfield are true, Liverpool are faced with a significant dilemma.

Losing van Dijk and Konate in the space of a year would be a defensive catastrophe, particularly as the club is still adjusting to the upcoming transition under Arne Slot.

With Alexander-Arnold also heavily linked to Real Madrid, Liverpool’s hierarchy must act fast to avoid an exodus of key defensive players.

Whether that means securing new deals, negotiating summer sales, or identifying top-tier replacements, decisions must be made swiftly if the club wants to maintain its status as one of Europe’s elite.
