Bruno Guimaraes has had a tough few weeks, dipping below his sensational best and looking like a man in need of a rest, which probably explained why he was taken out of the side in our FA Cup defeat to Brighton.
However, back in the starting 11 last night, the Brazilian was a pivotal part of a “massive” win at the London Stadium, scoring the only goal of the game and rallying the troops in a 1-0 victory that sends us back up to sixth.
He was on media duties after the game and he spoke superbly, all after orchestrating a sing-song in front of the Newcastle United away end at full-time!
Speaking to Jamie Carragher and Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football team after last night’s win, Bruno Guimaraes was in brilliant form.
Our captain discussed out determination to bring Champions League football back to the club and spoke bullishly about our belief heading into Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
Despite admitting that the final and chance to “make history” at Newcastle has been a “little bit” of a distraction in the build up, he talked up our chances and confidence in the camp – saying Liverpool may be one of the best teams in the world but we have the best striker in Alexander Isak!
Talking live on Sky Sports, he said: “Massive win. We want to fight for Champions League again. We have seen people doubt us – but we don’t doubt ourselves.
“This Carabao Cup is like the World Cup for us because we know how much it means. We want to make history for this club. It’s a long time for the fans without a trophy so it’s a big game.”
“It’s been a little bit (of a distraction) to be honest with you. Of course we think about the final, it’s massive for the club’s history. We want to be part of it and make that history.
“We are going to play against one of the best teams in the world but we have Isak who is the best striker in the world, we have the confidence, anything can happen. I’m hopeful we can go to Wembley and lift the trophy.”
