Chelsea loanee hailed as “world class”creates history, achievement hasn’t happened for 41 years

Djordje Petrovic is having a brilliant season at Strasbourg and his loan spell arguably couldn’t be going any better.

Chelsea signed the 25-year-old from MLS side New England Revolution in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £14m.

The Serbia international impressed under Mauricio Pochettino over the second half of the season when he replaced the injured Robert Sanchez.

Petrovic continues to impress for Strasbourg

Many expected Petrovic to stay and be number one this season, but the decision was taken to go with Sanchez, whilst the Blues also signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal.

That harshly left Petrovic surplus to requirements and he was sent on loan to sister club Strasbourg, where he’s having a great season.

Petrovic has played a key role with Strasbourg sitting seventh in Ligue 1 and right in the hunt to qualify for European football.

The Serbian has been one of Strasbourg’s best players and manager Liam Rosenior hailed him as world class earlier this season.

Strasbourg have been brilliant defensively this season and Petrovic’s clean sheet against Nantes on Sunday was the club’s fifth in a row.

According to French outlet L’Equipe it’s the first time Strasbourg have done that since 1984, which was 41 years ago.

Petrovic has demonstrated he’s more than good enough to play for Chelsea and he’s expected to compete for the number one shirt next season.

If true then it appears one of Sanchez or Jorgensen will need to leave the club as all three can’t stay and compete to be first choice.

A new goalkeeper can’t entirely be ruled out and Chelsea have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, whilst there’s also been links to Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale.

Petrovic deserves his chance next season and it would be a real shame to see him sold, and despite reports stating otherwise it still feels like there’s a chance he leaves.
