Report: Why Todd Boehly may pause his ownership of Strasbourg as Chelsea push for Champions League football next season

While Chelsea have always been at the forefront of the new owners’ thinking, those in charge of the club have interests elsewhere in football.

Not long after buying the Blues, Todd Boehly and BlueCo became owners of Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, as they kicked off their ambitious multi-club model.

Fans of the French side have actively rejected their new ownership, with Strasbourg supporters protesting Boehly and co and the view that they were going to become a feeder club for Chelsea.

However, those problems have gone away for now due to the excellent form of the Ligue 1 side, and the quality of players that have become available to them.

Arguably their best performer this season has been Andrey Santos, a player currently on loan from Chelsea.

Todd Boehly may freeze Strasbourg ownership next season

While Santos will play at Stamford Bridge next season, Liam Rosenior has been able to make use of his talents in France, even naming him captain on occasion.

Djordje Petrovic has starred for Strasbourg too, currently on a run of five clean sheets in a row as he proves it may have been a mistake by Chelsea to not pursue with him between the sticks.

The relationship between the two sides has been profitable for both so far, however could be about to come to a temporary end if both sides achieve their goals this season.

According to The Telegraph, two clubs under the same ownership cannot play in the same European competition, and the one who finishes lower in their respective league will be relegated to a lower format of European football.

Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League, and are aware that it is extremely likely that five sides will qualify for the Champions League from England.

However, Strasbourg’s good form now has them just four points away from the Champions League places, meaning a tough decision could realistically have to be made this summer.

The report goes on to say that the Blues have plans in place should this situation arise, with them likely to follow what Manchester United did with Nice and freeze their ownership of Strasbourg.

Chelsea’s statistical chances of qualifying for the Champions League

The race for Champions League places couldn’t be closer in the Premier League at the moment, even if five sides qualify from England.

The latest statistical preditction from Opta had Chelsea finishing 5th, with that coming after their big defeat to fellow European-chasers Brighton.

Since then, the Blues have picked up maximum points from wins against Southampton and Leicester, however the big games are to come as far as they are concerned.

Enzo Maresca will be hopeful that the upcoming return from injury of Romeo Lavia and Nicolas Jackson can see them pick up some big results in the final weeks of the season.
