CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns remained busy deep into the night on the first day of the NFL negotiating window.
They agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth up to $10 million with offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas, who spent the past five years with the Commanders, his agent Dan Saffron told cleveland.com at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Lucas, 33, started games at both left and right tackle for the Commanders, and can serve as the Browns swing tackle unless he wins a starting job. He started seven of 14 games for the 12-5 Commanders last season, but none of their three playoff games as they made it all the way to the NFC Championship but lost to the Eagles.
Lucas became expendable on Monday when the Commanders traded for Texans left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Depending on the health of Browns 2023 fourth round pick Dawand Jones, Lucas could find some playing time at left tackle. Jones, who performed well in his three-game tryout at that spot last season, is coming off a broken fibula and also a knee scope to clean up lingering issues from his 2023 surgery to repair a torn MCL.
Browns left guard Joel Bitonio said at a Browns Coaches Clinic last month that Jones is working hard at the Browns facility and has lost some weight. If he comes back strong, he’ll make a case for the starting job. But the Browns are also making sure that their new starting, whoever that is, will be adequately protected on his blindside.
They hosted LSU left tackle Will Campbell, a top 10 NFL draft prospect, for a top 30 visit at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus last week, and have now brought in Lucas. All-Pro Jack Conklin is set to start again at right tackle.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Lions in 2014, he spent his first three seasons there before stints with the Rams and Saints. Over those six seasons, Lucas started 16 of the 37 games he played. Finding a longtime home in Washington, he started 38 of 76 games over the past five years.
