‘Flop market’ – Aston Villa part of club’s €130m+ transfer mess

Douglas Luiz had an impressive time at Aston Villa but his stint at Juventus is not going as planned.

The Brazilian joined from the Birmingham club in the summer transfer window and has managed to play only 795 minutes in all competitions, having picked up injury problems as well.

The Old Lady fell to a 4-0 loss to Atalanta at the weekend. While the Brazilian didn’t feature as he’d been out of action due to a fitness issue, Gazzetta dello Sport have criticised the deal which took him to Turin from Aston Villa.

They describe Juventus’ summer transfer window as a ‘Flop Market’, adding how the signings of Nico Gonzalez and Teun Koopmeiners have also failed so far.

They state that Douglas Luiz has ‘practically never been seen’ due to his physical problems and misunderstandings with manager Thiago Motta.

Further criticism is aimed at sporting director Cristiano Guintoli, who spent over €130m on the ex-Aston Villa man, Gonzalez and Koopmeiners.

Juve are already out of the Coppa Italia and the Champions League. Even though they are still in a top four race, they are likely to finish the season trophy-less.

Should Aston Villa want to take the Brazilian back then the opportunity is there for a good deal, especially if Juventus fail to qualify for the Champions League.
