Metal debris falls from building in Bartley, narrowly missing man on ground floor

SINGAPORE - Parts of an external structure from a building in the Bartley area came crashing down onto the street below on March 11, narrowly missing an employee from a store on the ground floor.

Images of the scene show debris strewn across the road near Inspace at 24 New Industrial Road.

The debris consisted of metal beams measuring nearly 2m or more in length that appeared to have broken off from a section of the upper floors of the building facade.

Footage seen by ST from a ceiling camera inside the employee’s office show him just outside the unit as a thunderous crash is heard. The employee jumps backwards towards his office door as a piece of debris falls to the ground where he was standing.

A tenant at Inspace who wanted to be known only as Ms L said she was not informed by building management of the incident, and was told merely to not use the entrance and the exit on the ground floor.

Members of the building’s security team were seen moving the metal debris away by themselves, she added.

A representative from another tenant, Everyday Curtains, said its business has been “severely affected”, with the company having to cancel all appointments for the day due to the debris that had fallen outside its unit.

When The Straits Times arrived at the scene at about 3.50pm, the debris had already been shifted off the road, with some relocated to a nearby grass patch and the rest stacked at parking spaces outside units on the ground floor.

According to an Instagram story posted at about 6pm, Everyday Curtains said the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and police had sealed off the building and nearby areas.

The Inspace building, developed by SLB Development subsidiary SLB-Oxley (NIR), is managed by Chambers Property Management Services. It was completed in 2022, containing 84 units across eight floors.

ST has contacted BCA and Chambers Property Management Services for more information.
