Man Utd have unveiled plans to build a new stadium that will cost an estimated £2 billion.
Manchester United hope to have a new stadium built by 2030, with a desired deadline of 2032 at the very latest. On Tuesday morning, United officially revealed plans to replace their existing Old Trafford home with an industry-leading 100,000 capacity venue.
The initial design concepts proposed by architects at Foster and Partners said the stadium would feature an umbrella design and a new public plaza that is twice the size of Trafalgar Square. The new stadium would also feature three masts called 'the trident', which would be visible from 37.4km away, including the outskirts of Liverpool.
The proposals would see Old Trafford become the largest football stadium in the UK, and the club would use the new facility to host additional events, including concerts. The current proposals would enable United to play matches at their current stadium until the new facility was ready.
How long it will take Manchester United to build new stadium
United believe the access provided by the Manchester ship canal would allow them to speed up the process of building the stadium, as it would allow them to transport large materials directly to the site. A stadium of such size would typically take around 10 years to build, but United are confident it could take just five years to complete.
The key factor could be the start date for the project, which remains up in the air amid the UK Government's regeneration programme. “It depends how quickly the Government gets going with the regeneration programme," Ratcliffe said. "I think they want to get going quite quickly, they want to see progress in this term.
“Past Governments have sponsored a number of these regenerative schemes, but they have primarily been in and around London. One of two smaller ones in the north, but this will be the biggest of this scale in the north. We will underpinning government growth plans with a new stadium. It’s obvious the more iconic or extraordinary the stadium is, the more successful the regeneration scheme will be."
United claims the project will create up to 92,000 new jobs and more than 17,000 new homes, attracting an additional 1.8 million visitors annually.
