A former Super Bowl MVP had a lot to say about Shedeur Sanders.
Super Bowl champion quarterback Kurt Warner identified one glaring weakness on tape involving former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders slipped to outside the top 20 in the latest CBS Sports NFL Mock Draft.
"I'm not a draft guy. So, I don't go back and watch every single snap that all of these guys have," Warner told television analyst Joel Klatt, another former Colorado quarterback. "I will agree that Shedeur may throw the best ball. And what I mean by that is the most catchable, the most accurate ball of all of these guys. I love that he can place the ball. He's got great touch. I think he throws a really good deep ball. All of those things.
"With that being said, I felt in the last four games that Shedeur was very uneasy in the pocket. Very seldom did I see him strong in the pocket and get back and set and read and deliver the ball. It was almost like he was always uneasy back there."
Perhaps Sanders' was "uneasy" in the pocket because he played behind a Colorado offensive line that gave up 99 sacks over the last two seasons. No quarterback in the country was sacked more often than Sanders (94 times) since the start of the 2023 campaign.
"I'm just uneasy because I've gotten hit so much," Warner said. "But that was the thing that concerned me was that I felt like he very seldom went through the process. ... I just want to see him more solid in the pocket and the ability to process quickly so he doesn't have to get uneasy after first look and go create a throw. To stay in there, see it, understand it, and get the ball out a little bit more on time than I saw."
Deion Sanders chastised Colorado's offensive line play several times over the last two seasons, especially early during the 2023 campaign after his quarterback was harassed and sacked seven times during a loss to UCLA. Deion Sanders said after the game that Shedeur Sanders received an injection at halftime just to mask the pain of being hit, so he could play in the second half.
Shedeur Sanders called out his teammates up front after last season's Week 2 loss to Nebraska following a five-sack disappointment.
"I mean, how many times did (Nebraska quarterback Dylan) Raiola get touched?" Shedeur Sanders asked after the game. "Of course when you're able to run the ball consistently, that opens up the pass, you know? But it's just like, you've got to understand what your team's good at. Why would we keep running the ball when we get out there and there's a must-get situation and we don't get it?"
