Man Utd have already decided where they will play while new £2bn stadium is built

Manchester United announcing plans for their new 100,000-capacity stadium has nudged many supporters to ask the same questions: How long will it take, and where will the team play if Old Trafford is getting demolished? There is naturally fear among some fans over the harrowing prospect of ground-sharing with bitter rivals Manchester City until United's new state-of-the-art home is ready.

Others are concerned that the club may have to move further afield temporarily and replicate Tottenham Hotspur, who played at Wembley Stadium between 2016 and 2019. The new stadium, estimated to cost around £2billion, will be erected on the land adjacent to Old Trafford, but the magnitude of the operation draws the risk of disruption. However, supporters have little to fear about the process once it eventually gets underway.

That's because United have no plans to play their matches at another venue. The stadium will stand on the same site as Old Trafford, but it isn't on the same footprint.

It will allow the Red Devils to continue playing at 'The Theatre of Dreams' before they bid an emotional farewell when it is knocked down as part of the regeneration of the wider area.

That's an astonishing prospect, considering the scale of the project.

United's new stadium will become the tallest building in Manchester, with the highest of the three spirals in the 'trident' design at 200m, pipping the Beetham Tower, which stands at 169m.

In a stunning comparison to the country's current biggest stadium, the famous Wembley arch is petite in comparison, reaching a height of 135m.
