'First thing you need to do is win one' - McKenna knows time is running out for Blues

While they've largely been competitive in the Premier League all season, the reality is that the Blues are winless in the league this year and sit six points from safety.

And Wolves, the side they are chasing in the battle against relegation, have a far superior goal difference, meaning Town are effectively seven points from salvation with games fast running out.

It is a very tall order for McKenna's men, who host high-flying Nottingham Forest at Portman Road on Saturday, while Wolves visit rock-bottom Southampton.

But the Town boss insisted they can't worry about what other teams are doing as they try to pull off an unlikely escape.

Town have only got ten games left to save themselves from the drop _(Image: Ross Halls)_ "We have to just focus on ourselves," he stressed. "That's the reality.

"We have 10 games left, we're going to have to win a good few of those games, we're going to have to win at a greater rate than we have so far this season.

"The first thing you need to do is win one and then you can talk about a run of form or a run of wins, or whatever.

"If we don't manage to do that then we won't be successful at the end of the season in terms of trying to stay in the division. If we do manage to do that then let's see where that takes us.

"We don't have a crystal ball that tells us how other teams will do and how many wins we'll need.

"We know it's probably going to be a significant number. All we can use our energy on is ourselves."

Jaden Philogene is one of Town's talented young players _(Image: PA Sport)_ Town's side is packed with talented young players, most of whom are playing in the top tier for the first time. That suggests the future is bright, regardless of what happens in the short term.

Speaking after the defeat at Crystal Palace, McKenna stressed: "If you're talking about our front line today you've got Jaden (Philogene) who's just turned 23, Liam (Delap) who's just turned 22, Julio (Enciso) just 21, Jack Clarke just turned 24, Omari (Hutchinson) comes on, he's just turned 22.

"That's a lot of talented young players, and to have them at Ipswich Town is a real positive thing.

"It also means they're not going to be the finished product. If they were the finished product then they wouldn't be at Ipswich Town.

"We've got to keep working and believing in those boys and pushing them to get better. I'm sure they will."
