‘Originating In The Ukraine Area’: Elon Musk Blames NFL X Outage On Foreign Actors

Elon Musk, the CEO of X, recently responded to news of his app’s service being down on Monday. The timing of the outage was frustrating for NFL media and fans, as Monday was the start of the legal tampering portion of free agency.

National reporters like Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network and Adam Schefter of ESPN use their platform on X to break stories on the latest deals for free agency. However, Monday’s outage meant that posts were delayed or deals were being reported live on TV and published on websites. (Like how it used to work.)

Elon Musk claims there was a cyberattack

Musk came under fire from fans for the outage. He responded with a message on social media.

“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏,” Musk posted. “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing …”

Per Todd Spangler of Variety, Musk claimed IP addresses from Ukraine were connected to the cyberattack.

“Musk, in an interview Monday afternoon on Fox Business Network, told anchor Larry Kudlow that the company was still “not sure exactly what happened” but claimed the attack came from IP addresses “originating in the Ukraine area.” Kudlow interviewed Musk at Washington, D.C.’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building,” Spangler wrote.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) toses the ball to New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams (17, not shown) as other teammates provide blocking, Sunday January 5, 2025, in East Rutherford.

The service on X improved significantly on Tuesday. Fans of football should be able to receive timely updates for big signings such a free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who could be agreeing to a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers or New York Giants at any time in the next 24-48 hours.
