Arne Slot touchline ban labelled 'a disgrace' as 'nonsense' referee report slammed

Arne Slot was frustrated with Liverpool

Arne Slot has watched Liverpool's past two Premier League matches from the stands

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has slammed the referee report from Michael Oliver which landed Arne Slot a two-match touchline ban.

The Reds boss, who is now back in the dugout after watching Liverpool's 3-1 win over Southampton from the stands, was also fined £70,000 by an independent Football Association commission following the fiasco.

Slot accepted a charge of acting in an improper manner and using insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after James Tarkowski blasted home a last-gasp equaliser in the final ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park last month.

While all parties have now moved on from the incident, Westerveld feels his compatriot Slot may have been hard done by.

He told ViaPlay when asked whether he felt the sanctions imposed were fair: “No, if you add in what he said to the linesman because, as you saw, it was two seconds that he shook that hand [of Michael Oliver]. It was quite a list. He can talk fast in that time. I think it is a disgrace that he gets suspended for this at all."

When asked whether he thought Oliver's post-match report was "nonsense", Westerveld replied: "Yeah, it is when you see that footage.

“As a trainer he has a role model function, for the whole world. He is the trainer of Liverpool. If you see this, he walks over, gives him a shake, then whatever he says, he’s already walking away. If that referee doesn’t do anything, there is no problem.”

Slot was sent off immediately by Oliver, who alleged the Liverpool boss said while shaking his hand: "If we don't win the league, I'll f****** blame you."

The Dutch head coach later disputed the alleged language used and instead claimed he said "if we don't win the league, I will have you to thank for that."

The FA also alleged Slot said Oliver "f****** gave them everything" and hoped the referee "was proud of that performance."

Slot has since issued an apology both privately and in public and conceded that his frustrations had got the better of him after Liverpool shipped their late lead. His fine was later reduced from £100,000 to £70,000 due to mitigating factors including the fact Slot apologised for his actions.

Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain tonight in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash. They take a 1-0 lead into the blockbuster match following Harvey Elliott's 87th-minute winner at the Parc des Princes last Wednesday.
