Leeds United are already planning for a return to the Premier League, despite the Championship promotion battle being razor close.

Daniel Farke‘s side are level on points at the summit with Sheffield United with third-placed Burnley just two points behind.

The Whites will be expected to get back to winning ways at Elland Road against Millwall (12 March) and they may have been handed further motivation after a new transfer update.

Leeds reach Kalvin Phillips agreement

A verbal agreement has been reached between Kalvin Phillips and Leeds for a transfer, according to TEAMtalk.

The report (11 March) claims that City will not block a departure for the England star and that a £20million fee would secure his services.

It states that the former Whites midfielder would need to agree to a lower wage than he is on at the Etihad Stadium but that is not expected to be an issue.

Phillips return makes perfect sense for Leeds

Leeds will need to upgrade their squad dramatically if they secure promotion, with the latest promoted teams set to come straight back down.

That suggests that the level between the divisions is at an all-time high and they need to bridge it rapidly with quality additions, otherwise they will be relegated immediately.

Season Club PL appearances

2022/23 Manchester City 12

2023/24 Manchester City 4

2023/24 West Ham 8

2024/25 Ipswich Town 16

Phillips Premier League appearances since leaving Leeds.

The 29-year-old is familiar with the Elland Road outfit and the Premier League having made 40 appearances since his £45million move to Manchester City in 2022, 16 with the Citizens and the rest on loan at West Ham and Ipswich Town.

Phillips would be a great start to their business and a real feelgood move for both parties, but more is needed if they are to remain in the top-flight for a long time rather than being a one-season wonder.

He may be able to rediscover his best form under Farke at the club he loves but signing the 29-year-old would be a gamble at this point in his career.

However, focus right now must remain on the action on the pitch, there is no point dreaming about transfers if the Yorkshire outfit do not achieve promotion as the season concludes.
