**Manchester United will pay around £89m to clubs this summer for players they have already signed.**
Speaking on _The Overlap_, Sir Jim Ratcliffe told Gary Neville that payments on past transfers are still being made:
“We’re paying for Antony, we’re buying Antony this summer. We’re buying Sancho this summer. We’re buying Hojlund and we’re buying Casemiro. We’re buying Onana.”
“I don’t know the exact number. I know the bill that we will pay this summer is £89 million for players United signed previously.”
Why is the club still paying for Sancho, Antony et al?
------------------------------------------------------
Paying for players in instalments is not unusual. It is actually common practice but it means the club are in the bizarre situation that they are shelling out money on someone like Sancho who has effectively left the club.
The 24-year-old moved to Chelsea on loan last year but the Blues have an obligation to buy him for £25m. The club will get some of the £72m they spent on Sancho back but they are essentially making a substantial loss, which they are still paying the price for now.
How does this impact United’s transfer budget?
----------------------------------------------
These instalment payments do complicate things when it comes to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules. Depending on when the £89m will need to be paid, it will be included either in this year’s or next year’s accounts.
That means there is less wriggle room when it comes to balancing the books. It is effectively £89m the club can’t spend on new signings and, as a consequence, more funds will have to be raised through sales.
In that context, reports that the Red Devils are open to selling homegrown talents [**like Kobbie Mainoo**](https://manunews.com/blog/man-utd-transfer-news-chelsea-kobbie-mainoo/) and Alejandro Garnacho make a bit more sense.
