Premier League teams winning matches? Newcastle United move further ahead in second spot

Opinion

Newcastle United, as measured up against all the other Premier League teams.

How do we gauge it?

Which Premier League team is outperforming a rival?

For Newcastle United and the rest, it surely comes down to what it always does.

How many matches you are winning!

So I have had a look at all 20 Premier League clubs this season…

**We are now seven months into the 2024/25 season, this is how many matches each Premier League team has won (and lost), in Premier League AND domestic cup competitions (as of the morning of Tuesday 11 March 2025):**

26 and 3 Liverpool

22 and 10 Newcastle United

18 and 6 [Arsenal](https://www.themag.co.uk/2025/01/arsenal-fans-comments-on-newcastle-united-ahead-of-semi-final-clash-intriguing/)

18 and 8 Forest

18 and 10 Man City

17 and 7 Brighton

16 and 9 Villa

16 and 9 Chelsea

16 and 10 Palace

15 and 9 Fulham

15 and 9 Bournemouth

15 and 16 Tottenham

14 and 14 Brentford

13 and 14 Man U

10 and 15 West Ham

9 and 11 Everton

9 and 19 Wolves

7 and 21 Leicester

6 and 25 Southampton

5 and 18 Ipswich

As you can see above, when it comes to domestic competitions this season, [Newcastle United](https://www.themag.co.uk/2025/03/is-1-89-per-match-price-rise-acceptable-2025-26-newcastle-united-season-ticket-prices/) are second most successful, when it comes to winning football matches.

It is still only Liverpool who have won more domestic matches this season than Eddie Howe’s side, the four more than NUFC as things currently stand.

Newcastle this week though now extending it to four more wins than Arsenal, Man City and Forest after United’s victory over West Ham.

Then it is Newcastle with five more wins than Brighton, six or more than the rest.

You look at West Ham and they have less than half (10) the wins this season that Newcastle do (22).

Yet you bizarrely have some Newcastle United fans still determined to make out that this is some kind of disappointing season, Eddie Howe somehow having underachieved. Even though it is the exact opposite of that, Eddie Howe performing minor miracles against the odds, the same as the last two seasons.

In a cup final and level on points with fifth, two points off fourth and four points off third, with only 10 PL games to go.
