Paris Saint-Germain stand between Liverpool and reaching the quarter-final of the Champions League - and a potential bad omen has emerged ahead of Tuesday night's match. The Reds will take on the French giants in the second leg of their last-16 tie at Anfield as they look to take advantage of their 1-0 lead.

Harvey Elliott scored the only goal in the first leg at the Parc des Princes last week to give Liverpool a one-goal advantage over PSG. The result means that avoiding defeat will be enough for the Reds to book a place in the quarter-final where they would face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge.

It has already been confirmed that Istvan Kovacs will be the referee for the clash between Liverpool and PSG at Anfield. This will only be the second time that Kovacs has refereed a Reds fixture in his career, but it will be the fifth time he has done so for PSG.

Kovacs was the referee for Liverpool's 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League back in February 2023. The Reds went 2-0 up in that game with goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah before conceding five which proved to be too sizeable deficit to overcome in the second leg. For PSG, they already have experience of Istvan Kovacs being the referee for their matches this season. The 40-year-old took charge of their 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the league phase of the competition.

However, it was last season where PSG will be able to call upon happy memories from Kovacs being the referee. Kovacs was in the middle for PSG's 4-1 win over Barcelona in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

The win helped PSG overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg after trailing by one goal with a defeat at the Parc des Princes, just as they currently do to Liverpool this time around. The Reds will be hoping that the same does not happen again when they host the French giants at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
