Jaguars plan to make Jourdan Lewis the NFL’s highest-paid nickel

Jourdan Lewis is switching teams, and he could be the highest-paid nickel cornerback in the NFL in 2025.

Lewis, a former standout at Michigan, agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the Jaguars on Monday, according to the NFL Network.

The Detroit native has spent his entire NFL career -- eight seasons -- with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Lewis has gone to become of the league’s best slot-cornerbacks.

In 16 games last season, Lewis tallied a career-high 71 tackles (including three for a loss) along with a sack, an interception and eight pass breakups.

As part of the deal with Jacksonville, per NFL Network, Lewis is set to make $12.5 million in the first year and is guaranteed $20 million over the life of the contract.

Monday was the first day of NFL free agency, allowing teams and players to begin negotiations. Deals cannot be signed and executed until 4 p.m. ET Wednesday.

The Jaguars also reportedly agreed to a deal with free-agent safety Eric Murray, bolstering its secondary following a disappointing 4-13 season.

Lewis was a star defensive back at Michigan from 2013 to 2016, twice earning all-Big Ten and national All-American honors for his play on the field, setting the program record for single-season pass breakups (22) and career pass breakups (45).

The Big Ten named him the league’s defensive player of the year in 2016.
