Newcastle United fans watch on as Manchester United unveil plans for 100,000 seater Old…

Manchester United today confirmed their plans to leave Old Trafford and build a new 100,000 seater stadium next to the existing ground.

Newcastle United are currently considering doing something similar with a new stadium in Leazes Park, overlapping the current St James' Park site being mooted.

It has seemingly taken Man United considerably less time to get moving with their project since Jim Ratcliffe bought into the club compared to Newcastle's progress since the PIF arrived, although Man United have likely been working on their stadium plans since before Ratcliffe appeared.

The announcement this morning clarified that the new stadium would be built near the existing ground but it does mean the end of Old Trafford after 115 years.

Manchester United will move away from Old Trafford with new stadium to be built nearby

It shows that the club are willing to forego history in the name of progress, something that has taken a lot of time for Newcastle fans to grasp, with many still emotionally tied to St James' Park.

What Newcastle United must do now is closely monitor the reaction of Manchester United fans and see how they handle the idea of moving from Old Trafford. Let's be honest, though. most of them probably wouldn't even notice they'd moved, they'd still be getting off at the same train station after boarding at King's Cross.

Newcastle fans are starting to lean towards a new stadium, particularly due to the new ground's proposed close proximity to the existing site. Remaining a city centre location, especially one that dominates the Newcastle skyline is hugely important to fans.

Manchester United's new stadium will look like a circus big top

Hopefully, whatever the architect firm employed by Newcastle United comes up with is better than whatever is going on with the new Manchester United stadium.

The big top themed mosquito net looking thing over the stadium is quite apt given the clowns who currently run Man United, but it gives the new ground a face only a mother could love.

The redevelopment of the area leading up to the stadium looks great, though, as the surrounding areas around Old Trafford, as things stand, are ghastly.

Surely, whatever Newcastle come up with for their stadium will at least look better than the quarantine circus tent.
