Should these Saints players be on Tuchel's 55-man England longlist?

Former Chelsea manager Tuchel takes charge of his first England game against Albania on Friday, March 21, before facing Latvia three days later.

The German coach has been keeping tabs on several England players and has drawn up a 55-man longlist before selecting his official squad.

“He's got 55 players on a longlist and makes sure that he's got a strong connection with them," FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has explained.

With that in mind, we have assessed whether these Saints players should have been contacted by Tuchel ahead of this month's international break.

Aaron Ramsdale

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is the most likely Saints player to have been in contact with the new England boss.

Tuchel does not have a wealth of options in goal and Ramsdale has shown his quality at times this season, despite conceding 48 goals in 20 Premier League games.

His heroics against Everton, Fulham and Ipswich Town are the reason Ivan Juric's side are not even further adrift at the foot of the table.

Ramsdale was called up by interim boss Lee Carsley in November but had to withdraw after breaking his finger in a 2-0 defeat at Wolves.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper was in England's squad at Euro 2024 and will want to add to his five caps before the next major tournament.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis was also named in Carsley's final England squad in November having excelled as under-21s captain.

The 23 year old scored against the Republic of Ireland on his debut at Wembley but his club form has since suffered.

Harwood-Bellis revealed his England ambition following his dream debut but it remains to be seen if that goal was enough to impress Tuchel.

"I'm striving to be with the senior squad. I've played for the U21s for a long time now," he explained. "The depth is incredible. It's going to be hard but I will try my best."

No outfield player has made more errors leading to goals than Harwood-Bellis (four) in the Premier League this campaign.

Harwood-Bellis does possess desirable attributes for a centre-back, he is confident when passing out from the back and strong in the air, but will have others ahead of him.

Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite and Chelsea's Levi Colwill stand a better chance of joining the squad as backup options.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Carsley mentioned Kyle Walker-Peters as an option during his first press conference but the full-back's name has not been raised publicly since.

Walker-Peters' versatility saw him placed on standby for Carsley's first camp in September - although the all-important call never came.

And while he offers depth on both sides of defence, the 27 year old will have slipped down the Three Lions pecking order this season.

Walker-Peters, who is out of contract this summer, previously explained that performing well for Southampton would give him the best chance of earning an England recall.

"It's still there in my sights, playing for England. It's still something I aim to do," he told the Daily Echo in December.

"I'm just trying to perform the best I can for Southampton. Ultimately, the better I am performing, the more chance I have of representing my country."

The two-time England international has played more minutes than anyone at Saints this season (2,292), yet they have conceded 68 goals in 28 Premier League games.

Tyler Dibling

Teenager Tyler Dibling has been backed to become an England international in the future but that time is not right now.

The 19 year old was called up to the under-21s for the first time in November and his international career should remain with Carsley's side.

Dibling's form has suffered under Juric, despite scoring three goals in the Croatian's first four games, but he is working with the manager to improve "small details".

Before his maiden under-21s call-up, Dibling's international career was played between the under-17s and under-19s.

He has already played at international tournaments.
