Microsoft has added support for the JPEG XL image format to Windows 11 24H2 by making the JPEG XL Image Extension available on the Microsoft Store. Users can install this extension to view JPEG XL files directly within the operating system, as reported by MSPowerUser.
JPEG XL is a new, free technology that meets the needs of photographers and anyone who values high-quality images. It performs better than traditional JPEG files and newer formats like HEIC, AVIF, and WebP in several ways.
JPEG XL keeps sharp images and vibrant colors despite having smaller file sizes. It is optimized for speed, making it quicker to save, open, and share images. The format supports a wider range of colors, resulting in more lifelike and accurate images—something traditional JPEGs often struggle to achieve. According to the JPEG XL website, JPEG XL files are 55% smaller than JPEG and up to 25% smaller than AVIF.
To enable JPEG XL support, users can download the JPEG XL Image Extension from the Microsoft Store and install it. Once installed, Windows 11 File Explorer will display previews and thumbnails of JPEG XL files. Users can set JPEG XL images as desktop backgrounds and open them using Windows Media Player Legacy.
Microsoft says that support for JPEG XL is coming to additional apps, giving users more options for managing these files. This update comes after growing interest in more efficient image formats, and users expect more apps to support JPEG XL in the future.
