'I think' - ex-Premier League referee drops his stance on red card debate in Man Utd vs Arsenal after challenge on…

Ex-Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has now had his say on a controversial challenge on Alejandro Garnacho in Manchester United’s match with Arsenal.

Manchester United and Arsenal were in Premier League action on Sunday and the Red Devils welcomed the Gunners to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils broke the deadlock on the weekend in first-half stoppage time, with Bruno Fernandes netting a superb free-kick for United.

However, United were unable to hold their lead in the second half and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice cancelled out Bruno Fernandes’ first-half opener.

Ruben Amorim’s men had to settle for a 1-1 scoreline at the full-time whistle and United and Arsenal shared the points from Sunday’s Premier League encounter.

United have won only nine Premier League matches in 28 fixtures in the 2024-25 campaign and the Red Devils languish in 14th place in the league table.

Ruben Amorim’s side are 15 points adrift from the Premier League top four and United are currently 17 points clear of the relegation zone.

What Dermot Gallagher saw in challenge on Alejandro Garnacho in Man Utd vs Arsenal

Alejandro Garnacho impressed Manchester United fans with his superb performance against Premier League side Arsenal at Old Trafford on the weekend.

The 20-year-old Spain-born attacker started the match under Ruben Amorim and Alejandro Garnacho was a lively presence over the course of the 90 minutes.

During the Premier League match, Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino caught Garnacho when he was down on the pitch and United fans were furious with what they saw.

Mikel Merino escaped punishment from referee Anthony Taylor altogether, but Dermot Gallagher has offered his two cents on the incident involving Garnacho.

The former Premier League referee has suggested that Anthony Taylor could have shown a yellow, but Gallagher ruled out the idea that it was worthy of a red card.

“If the referee gives something, he’ll give a yellow card,” Gallagher said on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch.

“It doesn’t look good, but I don’t think it’s a red card. I think Casemiro also gives him a kick, so he got booted by two players!

“What helps Garnacho is that he stands on his boot rather than his ankle.”

Ruben Amorim makes eye-opening admission about Man Utd ace Alejandro Garnacho

Speaking after the result at Old Trafford, Amorim insisted that Garnacho played his best match for the Red Devils since the United manager’s arrival from Sporting CP.

“We have some good players for the transition like Garnacho,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“I think with Garnacho, and we’re always talking about Garnacho, he defended really well and attacked really well.

“I think it was the best game of Garnacho since I’ve been here. He’s improving and we understood the plan quite well.”

United will now return to Europa League action on Thursday at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils set to face Real Sociedad in their second-leg round-of-16 tie.
