Saliba admits he hasn’t enjoyed best season, jokes Gabriel is ‘carrying me’

William Saliba believes Arsenal have what it takes to win the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history this season.
The Gunners previously reached the final in the 2006/06 campaign when Arsene Wenger's 10 men conceded a one-goal lead in a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in Saint-Denis.
Defender Saliba feels there is no reason as to why the north Londoners cannot go all the way in this season’s competition.
When asked if Arsenal can win the trophy, he replied: "Yeah, of course we can win the Champions League. Otherwise, there's no point to play in the competition."
The France international also gave an honest assessment of his personal performances and admitted he has fallen below the standard set in the last campaign.
"This season I don't think I'm as good as in the previous season," he added.
"This season I'm not playing my best football, but that happens sometimes. I just have to work hard and do my best."
He then quipped: "Gabriel is carrying me! This season he's been really good."

When reflecting on the first-leg win over PSV in more detail, Saliba explained that last week's thumping scoreline was an accurate reflection of the game.
He also alluded to Ismael Saibari’s early chance that hit the crossbar, which would have moved the Dutch champions into a 1-0 lead on the night.
"Every game in the Champions League is hard to play and we know it wasn't easy to go there and beat PSV.
"To beat them 7-1 was a good feeling, and I think it was fair. We had some chances and we scored. In the Champions League, when you have chances, you have to score.
"If they scored before us, the game would've been different. It’s all about what you do in the two boxes.
"When you concede, you have to score. I felt that we did well."

The 23-year-old also spoke about Arsenal’s defensive record, and feels they have not been as solid as last season.
"We have conceded more goals in the Premier League, but have been better in the Champions League," he explained.
"Last season we were a bit better. This season we are still good, and we believe we can improve a bit more.
"We are still strong at the back, but we can do better."
