Man United are looking to bolster their attack following a disappointing return in front of goal so far this season.
Manchester United have been tipped for a huge summer transfer window following their difficult season and recent comments made by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. The level of ability in the Old Trafford attack has been under the microscope for months now, and new manager Ruben Amorim is looking to mould the side significantly into more of the team he wants.
United are currently 14th in the Premier League table, just one ahead of Everton and West Ham. Their goal return is one of the worst in the standings, with only teams below them scoring fewer so far.
There has been a lot of talk over United making some significant changes and while a number of positions have been linked with improvements, the attack is the glaring issue right now.
Man United eyeing major money move for 20-goal striker
The lack of goals coming from United’s frontline has been a cause for concern among fans and professionals alike. Rasmus Hojlund continues to come under fire for his lack of output and a new centre-forward seems to be the main focus for those looking to see United significantly improve next season.
According to GiveMeSport, United have ‘refused to rule out the possibility’ of considering a move for Porto’s Samu Aghehowa when the summer window opens for business.
Amorim is said to be ‘desperate’ to boost his side’s threat in attack as he approaches his first full season in charge of the Red Devils. A summer move for Aghehowa, a player Amorim will remember facing his former side Sporting CP earlier this season, has been described as ‘one to watch’.
The 20-year-old joined Porto last August and he has contributed a stunning 20 goals this campaign in all competitions. With his ability already on display at such a young age, the report says United are well aware Aghehowa will not come cheap if they do table an offer.
The clinical centre-forward has a release clause reportedly in the region of £84 million. Such a figure will be difficult for United to find without sanctioning a number of high profile departures, which could well be the case based on recent comments made about certain players.
Jim Ratcliffe discusses ‘overpaid’ players
In a recent interview with BBC Sport, Ratcliffe vocalised his backing of Amorim and praised him for the job he has done so far. However, he didn’t hold back when admitting he thinks some players are ‘not good enough’ are are being ‘overpaid’ at the club.
“If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn't buy, we're buying Antony, we're buying Casemiro, we're buying Onana, we're buying Hojlund, we're buying Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we've inherited those things and have to sort that out.
"For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we're paying £17m to buy him in the summer.”
Ratcliffe, who bought a 27.7 per cent stake in United last year in a £1.3 billion deal, stressed his aim to ‘put the club back on the rails’ and acknowledged he is ‘unpopular at the moment’ while he oversees these pending changes.
