"He's Become My Idol!" - Frank Leboeuf Lavishes Praise On Chelsea Star Who He Once Described As £60M Flop

Ex-Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has singled out Marc Cucurella for his excellent performances in recent weeks.

The Spaniard scored the winner against Leicester City on Sunday and, speaking to ESPN, Leboeuf was keen to praise the left-back who he had criticised heavily in the past:

“I want to mention somebody because I was very harsh, very hard on him about two years ago. Cucurella. I call him Cucu the saviour! That’s what I call him. He’s become my idol! That guy is amazing: defensively, offensively. Cucu the saviour, I love you.”

Cucurella did struggle during his first season at Stamford Bridge and Leboeuf was quick to say that the defender “was not good enough” for the club, questioning the decision to spend in excess of £60m on him.

Manchester United could have signed the Chelsea Player

It should be remembered that things got so bad for Cucurella that Chelsea seriously considered loaning him out during the 2023 summer transfer window.

A move to Old Trafford only collapsed because the Blues were not willing to include a break clause allowing United to end the loan deal early if things didn’t go to plan.

Cucurella needs more competition for his place

Ben Chilwill is currently out on loan at Crystal Palace and he is likely to leave Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis at the end of the season.

With Renato Veiga also currently at Juventus, Cucurella is pretty much playing every game for Chelsea at the moment and head coach Enzo Maresca would struggle to replace him if he gets injured.

Veiga will return from Juve in July but the Portuguese international has made it known that he wants to play at centre-half. For that reason, you would hope that the recruitment department are looking at bringing in another left-back.
