Liverpool had the better of the opening exchange, but they failed to take advantage and found themselves behind. However, they saw a route back ahead dashed on the stroke of half-time.

Dominik Szoboszlai had the ball just inside the area when he was taken down by Fabian Ruiz - who made contact with the back of the Hungarian's leg.

However, referee Istvan Kovacs waved away the appeals of the Liverpool players.

The incident did go to VAR - but they agreed with the on-field decision. And explaining their decision on Amazon Prime, Mark Clattenburg said: "Yeah, what's interesting is that he does get a kick on the back of the thigh, but then there seems to be one or two more seconds.

"He thinks about the contact and then goes down and that's what the referee and VAR have seen."

However, Liverpool fans were left less than impressed on social media - and they vented their frustration on X. "That’s a penalty for any other team, unless it’s Liverpool," one fumed.

"Szoboszlai just got blatantly kicked in the box and I’m genuinely surprised the ref didn’t give PSG a penalty for it," a second sighed. While a third posted: "He literally gets none of the ball, how is that NOT a foul on Szoboszlai?"

And another added: "Szoboszlai was kicked there you know fully kicked. No ball was attempted to be played!"

Liverpool fans had gone into the game with the advantage after their historic win in the French capital. And they had given their rivals a hostile welcome to the banks of the River Mersey.
