Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has handed Ruben Amorim a massive vote of confidence despite the club’s current position.
The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League, enduring their worst season to date, stuck in the bottom half of the table throughout the campaign.
The squad are currently preparing for the second leg of the Europa League round of 16, taking on Real Sociedad on Thursday after the first leg ended 1-1.
Lifting the Europa League title is the only chance for the club to keep European football next year after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham on penalties and a top-six finish in the Premier League is out of the question.
It’s been acknowledged that Amorim inherited the dire situation from Erik ten Hag, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe admitting the Dutchman’s contract extension in the summer was a mistake.
However, the club are backing Amorim to turn things around wanting him to remain at the club for the foreseeable future.
The news comes inline with United’s announcement today that the club are going forward with the plans of developing a new 100,000-seater stadium next door to Old Trafford, set to cost £2 billion.
The Athletic has reported that Omar Berrada has explained that United’s hierarchy would “love to open the new stadium with Ruben [Amorim] as head coach”.
With the build time projected as taking around five years, seeing it open at the start of the 2030/31 season, this statement shows huge confidence in Amorim being the right man to lead United for the seasons to come.
This is a sentiment shared by Sir Jim Ratcliffe in his recent interviews, praising the manager despite the injury setbacks he’s facing.
Speaking to the BBC, Ratcliffe commented: “If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest.”
He continued: “I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He’s an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time.
“You are beginning to see a glimpse of what Ruben can produce. I think you saw a glimpse of it against Arsenal. How many players against Arsenal on the bench did you recognise?
“How many have ever worn a Manchester United shirt for [the first team]… as there’s no squad left. We are down to the last 10 or 11 men in the squad really, of proper first-team players. Ruben is doing a super job.”
The faith the United seniors have in Amorim despite the results shows the solidarity in the club that Amorim is right to return The Red Devils to their former glory, and an acknowledgement that the Portuguese manager just needs time.
