Russell Wilson Gets Disappointing News on Free Agency

While Russell Wilson initially seemed like a perfect fit with the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning six of his first seven games after taking over as their starting quarterback, the season ended on a low note.

After the Steelers lost their final five games of the season, head coach Mike Tomlin did not commit to bringing Wilson back. However, after former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields agreed to a two-year $40 million deal with the New York Jets, Wilson's return seemed much more likely.

And with Pittsburgh pulling the trigger on a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks to land DK Metcalf, Wilson's former teammate, it seemed the like the Steelers were preparing to re-sign Wilson any day.

However, Aaron Rodgers' pending free agency plans is seriously impeding with Wilson's future.

While rumors swirled that the Tennessee Titans could be a fit for the former Super Bowl champ, SI's Albert poured cold water on that prospect, along with many of his possibly landing spots for that matter.

Breer wrote on March 11, "If Aaron Rodgers picks the New York Giants, I'm not sure where Russell Wilson lands. Maybe Pittsburgh swallows hard and brings him back. But other than that? I know the Tennessee Titans don't have any interest.

"The Cleveland Browns just traded for Kenny Pickett and, I think, could be waiting to see what happens with Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons. And I don't feel like there'd be much for him as a backup out there."

It's a tough blow for Wilson as the 36-year-old looks to find a landing spot in 2025. Following the end of the 2024 season, Wilson expressed his desire to remain in Pittsburgh.

That's the plan," Wilson said, per ESPN. "I love it here and everything else, and I think we have a great football team. Obviously it didn't end the way we wanted it to, and I think there's a lot more to do."

"I think they've known that I've always wanted to be here and play here, but it is also a process."
