Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbled off for Liverpool midway through their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Newcastle United supporters are tuned in tentatively as the Reds compete for a place in the round of 16. At the time of writing, PSG are winning 1-0, with an aggregate scoreline of 1-1 following Liverpool’s first-leg triumph last week.

Extra time and penalties would be music to Eddie Howe’s ears as they search for any advantage possible before Sunday’s final. The Magpies are looking to end a 70-year wait without domestic silverware at Wembley this weekend.

For Liverpool, the Carabao Cup is the lesser of the three trophies on offer, with the Premier League all but sewn up and the Champions League, as it stands, in the balance. But the trophy would mean the world to the Toon Army, who have been starved of success for multiple generations.

Newcastle were given a boost when Alexander-Arnold was hooked off following an awkward landing. While trying to close PSG midfielder Vitinha down, the 26-year-old fell and appeared to twist his ankle.

Following a lengthy stoppage, the Liverpool ace was hooked and, once he left the pitch, was placed onto a stretcher. Conor Bradley, his natural replacement, is also injured so Jarrell Quansah came on for the final 20 minutes of regulation time.

A nervy half an hour awaits at Anfield as PSG push the Reds all the way just days before the Carabao Cup final. While nobody wishes an injury on a professional player, the Magpies may be hoping for a few more knocks and bruises in the Liverpool camp before the full-time whistle.

Anthony Gordon vs Trent Alexander-Arnold - the battle that never was

Just 10 days ago, the Scouse duo provided one of the Carabao Cup final’s most intriguing match-ups. However, as is the fast-paced nature of football, they both now look to be sidelined on Sunday.

Gordon is definitely out after his petulant red card against Brighton last weekend. As for Alexander-Arnold, there has been no official confirmation - Arne Slot is expected to speak to the press at full-time - but his situation looked bleak.

There were faint calls for Newcastle to appeal Gordon’s dismissal but Eddie Howe revealed the club opted against doing so. Harvey Barnes is now in pole position to start on the left flank this weekend.

He said before the win against West Ham United on Monday: "We discussed it as a club, with the respected people that we need to discuss it with, the lawyers.

“We just felt that there probably weren't sufficient grounds. There was no intention from Anthony. Without going into too much detail on the actual event itself, I think the player (Jan Paul van Hecke) sort of bends down, and it makes the push look worse.

“There’s no intention from him to hurt anybody. But you have to look at it and go, ‘Does this have a chance of being successful?’ If there’s no chance of being successful, what’s the point of appealing? Anthony understands.”
