Liverpool 1-1 PSG Stats (1-4 on Pens): Donnarumma the Shootout Hero to Keep PSG’s UCL Dreams Alive

It took extra time and penalties for Paris Saint-Germain to defeat Liverpool at Anfield and progress to the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League.

After a 1-1 draw across the two legs, and a 1-0 win on the night for PSG, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s saves from Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones in the shootout were the difference and sent the Ligue 1 club through.

Both sides entered the game with unchanged starting XIs from the first leg – the first time that this has happened in a UEFA Champions League knockout tie for 10 years, since the 2015 semi-final between Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Liverpool certainly started the game with more attacking intent tonight than they did six days ago in Paris. It took them just 11 minutes to attempt twice as many shots (4) as they managed in the first leg (2). However, it was PSG that stunned Anfield with the opening goal just a minute later.

An excellent counter-attack saw Ousmane Dembélé pick the ball up on the halfway line before feeding the ball to Bradley Barcola on the right wing. Barcola put a teasing ball into the ball to force a mix-up between Alisson and Ibrahima Konaté and present Dembélé a simple tap-in to the net.

That was Dembélé’s 21st goal in 16 appearances across all competitions for PSG in 2025 already, more than any other player at a club within the top five European leagues.

Going into half-time, PSG’s expected goals total of 1.97 was already more than any other visiting side have managed in a competitive game at Anfield in 2024-25 and the Opta supercomputer was beginning to believe they could make it to the quarter-finals too. Before kick-off, the supercomputer gave them a 25.1% chance of reaching the last eight, but that had increased to 46.1% by half-time.

Liverpool came close to equalising eight minutes into the second half, with Trent Alexander-Arnold hitting the inside of the post with a shot before collecting the rebound and passing to Dominik Szoboszlai to score, but the assistant referee’s flag was raised, and the goal was disallowed.

The post saved PSG once again in 75th minute as substitute Jarell Quansah saw his header beat Donnarumma but bounce back off the woodwork as Liverpool came close to an equaliser.

Three minutes into extra time, and PSG were inches away from leading the tie for the first time. Désiré Doué found some space inside the box to turn and fire a shot at the Liverpool goal, but his strike flew just past the post with Alisson beaten.

With the scores tied across the two legs, it took the penalty shootout to decide the excellent tie and PSG prevailed to progress to the last eight. The shootout victory was the first by a French club in Champions League/European Cup history since Bordeaux versus Dnipro in a March 1985 quarter-final tie.

With this result Liverpool’s dreams of a domestic league, cup and Champions League treble have ended. They can have no complaints, however, as PSG were comfortably the better side over the two legs of the tie.
