Pat Stewart and The Patriot Way: The duties of Nebraska football's new general manager

There are two player evaluation grading scales in the NFL, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said on Tuesday, and one of them was popularized by coach Bill Belichick during his two-decade run with the New England Patriots.

Rhule, who coached the Carolina Panthers for three years, believes in that scale. His new general manager, Pat Stewart, uses it, too.

“Pat’s always been really a difference maker thinking about that, talking about that,” Rhule said. “So as we move into this new space in college — recruiting, retention and now finance — Pat’s another really, really smart person who can help us with that, take our evaluation skills to the next level.”

Rhule views Stewart like another coordinator-level job, similar to that of Dana Holgorsen or John Butler. Keith Williams, Troy Vincent and Avery Gossett continue to spearhead NU's high school recruiting evaluation while Sean Padden, previously GM, will move into a role that involves finance and analytics.

“He’ll oversee it, he’ll implement the philosophy,” Rhule said of Stewart, who worked with Rhule in Carolina. “…the way we evaluate college players within the portal is going to be different from the way we evaluate high school players.”

NU will use Stewart’s grading scale to evaluate transfer portal players.
