Bills Re-Sign James Cook’s 2 Backups

It's pretty obvious that the Buffalo Bills see their running back room as being led by James Cook followed by a collection of veterans and youthful targets...at least right now.

But with Cook looking for a long-term extension, and the Bills seemingly reluctant to make a deal happen, the organization isn't above trying to stay ahead of any potential problems from their rushing offense.

That would explain the last two moves the team has made to start free agency.

Buffalo agreed to terms on a free agent deal with former running back Ty Johnson, and Darrynton Evans. In the case of Johnson, he was with the team last season and was serviceable when called upon.

Evans, meanwhile, returns back to the Bills after missing most of the 2024 season due to injuries. This is his third stint with the team at this time.

Evans has rushed for 249 yards and one touchdown and caught 12 passes for 120 yards and one score over his five seasons in the NFL. He has also played for five teams during that same push.

Both Evans and Johnson join a running backs room led by Cook and second-year runner Ray Davis. Both backs are expected to lead the way in total touches, but Evans and Johnson could be seen as quality role players if Buffalo needed them.

With a roster battle now expected, the Bills should at least feel comfortable with their running back depth once again.
