Liverpool boss ripped for 'talking rubbish' in post-match spin

Craig Foster has ripped Arne Slot for "talking rubbish" after the Liverpool manager chose to accentuate the positives following his side's shock Champions League elimination on Wednesday (AEDT).

In a thrilling and unpredictable tie, Liverpool won 1-0 in Paris and PSG prevailed by the same margin at Anfield to send the round of 16 clash into extra time and then penalties - which the visitors won 4-1.

Despite the scorelines, PSG had the better of the play in the first leg and Liverpool likewise in the return match.

"He has to put a positive spin on everything right now," former Socceroos captain Foster said of Slot on Stan Sport.

"But where he was talking rubbish was where he was saying: 'oh well, we had a perfect performance today like they had last week.'

"Actually, you can't compare it... last week, they (Liverpool) only had one shot on target, which they scored, right?

"Whereas today, they (PSG) could have scored three in the first 15 minutes. He's talking rubbish. It's not true. He said our game today was as perfect today as what PSG were last week. That's crap...

"What Liverpool did today to PSG was not on the same planet to what PSG did to them last week."

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made two superb saves in the shootout to send PSG through to the quarter-finals along with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.

PSG will face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge, who square off on Thursday (AEDT).

"It does not matter if we deserve the win. Both teams deserved to go through," PSG manager Luis Enrique said.

"We were better in Paris and they were better here. My team showed great personality and character at Anfield."

The Ligue 1 leaders - seeking their first Champions League title - had lost at this stage in five of the past eight tournaments.

Liverpool are the runaway Premier League leaders in Slot's first season at the helm since replacing the legendary Jurgen Klopp.

"It was the best game of football I have ever been involved in," the Dutchman said.

"It was an incredible performance, especially if you compare it with last week. We were creating chances and then we were 1-0 down. We ran out of luck after last week."
