Arne Slot has revealed the only thing that was missing in Liverpool’s performance in their UEFA Champions League match against PSG on Tuesday night.
The Reds were eliminated from the Champions League after a 1-0 defeat and penalty shootout loss against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield.
Liverpool won 1-0 in the first leg but fell behind early in the second leg after Ousmane Dembele tapped the ball in from close range early in the first half to bring PSG level on aggregate and send the contest to extra time.
The visitors won the penalty shootout, with visiting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denying both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones from the spot, and PSG prevailed 4-1 to advance.
Although Liverpool ultimately fell to a disappointing loss, the Reds can hold their heads up for a strong performance in the second leg. Unlike in the first leg where PSG were the better side by far, Liverpool put up a strong showing in the second leg, especially in the first 45 minutes.
Speaking after the game, Slot was asked about his assessment of his side’s performance in the second leg.
“Incredible performance,” he said.
“Especially if you compare it with last week. The first 25 minutes, we were all over them, creating chance after chance, but then we went 1-0 down.
“We played, I would say, the perfect game, except for us scoring goals. I think it was the best game of football I was ever involved in.”
“It feels a bit unfair to go out in this round already if you were top of the table and face a team like PSG,” Slot added.
“That’s also the nice part about football. I think everyone around the world enjoyed watching this game. Last week we had a bit of luck, we didn’t have it today.”
